RE: Harper's Ferry KOA

I agree with Robin about location. While I don't make it habit of staying at KOA, Harpers Ferry national park is worth the grief of a not-so-great CG. The Nat. Park is a great place to visit. The Harpers Ferry KOA IS NOT a destination point! It is a place to park your rig and go to the park.

RE: best way to Canaan Valley State Park

Rt. 33 from Weston over to Canaan could be a good alternative. That section of Rt. 33 itself is OK, but then you would not want to take 219 north - instead continue on 33 E to Rt 32 N to get to Canaan. DO NOT take 33 any further east than Rt 220 (to Harrisonburg, VA) unless you have lots of dramamine. (55 to Strasburg is a better route to I-81.) As of today 9/22/08 gas at the Pilot is $3.41. At Deep Creek and Oakland it's $3.59. In WV it was $4.08 in Thomas/Davis yesterday. Granted, less of a difference this week, but it changes rapidly, up and down.

RE: Canaan Valley State Park

Nearby Oakland, MD has it's "Autumn Glory Festival" the week end(10/11-12) before that and it is a VERY big deal. I would think the weekend after should be "reasonable". I don't know when Elkins, WV has its "Forest Festival"? Anyone?

RE: Winter camping in western MD ski area? seven springs?

Don't know of any CG's open here at that time of year. You could check Double G in McHenry, or see if Wisp has (dry) parking available.

RE: best way to Canaan Valley State Park

Doug and Cassie have the time about right. From Morgantown to Rt. 219 S is about an hour. From I-68/219 to Canaan is maybe a little more than an hour. The best fuel price in the area is a little further east on I 68 at the Pilot (exit 22). It would be worth going the 10 miles over and back to save ~ .20-.25/gal. From there on (to Canaan) fuel prices are consistently high.

RE: best way to Canaan Valley State Park

I would take I 79 south to Morgantown, WV and then take I 68 east to Keysers Ridge, MD (mm 14) and take Rt. 219 south to Thomas, WV, then Rt 32 to Canaan Valley. All good road with some hills... but it IS Appalachia! The leaves should be peaking around Oct 15.

RE: Stopping friends from forwarding spam

My DW and I always forward back to them the REAL snopes comment. It's only fair, if they insist on believing that stuff AND continuing to keep it alive. Sheep! Being led!

RE: Freddie Mac & Fannie Mae....

OK... sooo I (and you) paid my mortagages, credit cards (the NEXT fiasco), kept a good credit rating, etc... where is my bailout? Do I have to keep paying for the 60" wide screen for the welfare case up the street, while I have a 25" analog? Change!

Reduced rates in WV Fall '08

Saw this in our local/regional newspaper... generally says that certain state parks are cutting their rates by 10% for the fall season. http://www.times-news.com/local/local_story_250215310.html Should be helpful for travelers through West Virginia!

RE: has anyone stayed at Ocean Waves in the Outer Banks

Agree that Ocean Waves is the best place to stay. All of the OBX campgrounds "pack 'em in" simply because space is at such a premium. They are smaller, and therefore more personal than the others.

RE: Umbilical has split at truck connection

I have always attached (ie: crimped one hook on the umbilical) a bungee cord to mine and put the other end into the hole in the TV bumper, just above the 7-pin connector. This is mainly to keep it from falling out and dragging down the highway. Happened once, a long time ago! Otherwise, I would just wrap it good with electrical tape.

RE: Somerset, PA to Charlottesville, VA

You might consider taking 522 south from Hancock, MD - at the intersection of I-70 and I-68 to Winchester VA (I-81). Good straight road (very little mountain) and will lop off ~ 30 min. travel time. Fuel prices in VA are better than the others. After that either 64 or 66 will be fine, as it is relatively flat there and both are relatively scenic. BUT... you'll want to take I-64E from I-81S at Staunton, VA. I-66 is pretty far north of Charlottesville and you DON"T want to be on I-95! By the way, I think you mean Hagerstown, MD.

RE: Where did all the analog VOMs go?

Our local hardware store still carries them for ~ 10 bucks. They're still around!

RE: I-77 South thru WV and VA ?? Good/Bad or Ugly??

Usually good fuel prices in VA and SC. Charlotte is usually a mess in the am and pm rush.

RE: Wall Drug, South Dakota, I-90

Like others have said, we went by Wall Drug and Corn Palace several times in our travels and never stopped. Last summer, we finally stopped at each. Now we've done it... might do it again. I've always wondered what they were like until we finally stopped. In my mind thats the reason for traveling! There are other places that we will not go back to, and more that we still need to visit.

RE: Western Pa., places to stay, things to do

Agree with all the above. Sept. is early for fall colors... more to Oct. 15 or so for that. Also add Seneca Rocks, WV for places to see. Slightly east of Canan Valley.

RE: Would you want to be a teacher?!?!?

Agreeing with hobo, it is NOT "them" doing it to US. We are doing it to ourselves. School systems and boards of educations and lawyers and everything else are only doing what we allow, elect, vote on etc.... If you're not doing something about it, you are part of the problem.

RE: I 70 from Hagerstown MD to PA Tpke overnite stay

On I 79, just west of Pittsburgh (Carnegie) there is construction. AM and PM rush are a mess, but by 10 am you should be OK! Don't know about north of Pgh.
